We will talk about the vital role of public housing, its contested history nationally and locally, and the current struggle for historic preservation at Glendale Townhomes, the oldest remaining public housing development in Minneapolis and a cornerstone of multiracial working-class life in the city.
This community-centered conference will provide a platform for public housing residents, historians, community advocates, and elected officials to engage in critical dialogue about the legacy and future of public housing in Minneapolis. The event will also shed light on Minneapolis Public Housing Authority’s (MPHA) ongoing efforts to demolish and privatize Glendale, and the residents’ organized resistance to protect it as public land and as a historic Black, brown, and immigrant working-class neighborhood.
This mini teaching conference will provide community members, students, organizers, and elected officials an opportunity to learn from public housing residents and their allies. It will serve as a space for public education, political accountability, and coalition-building. All sessions will be recorded to contribute to an archive documenting the defense of Glendale and the struggle for housing justice in Minneapolis.
Format: This one-day gathering will be organized into five main working sessions + an optional tour of Glendale Townhomes, with food, childcare, interpretation, and printed materials available to ensure accessibility for all participants.
